This review is from: Flags of Our Fathers / Letters From Iwo Jima [Blu-ray] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
Ok I have the boxset with both movies. And I feel its important to have both, they are a pair and was made that way. Clint said many would have made all the materiel in one movie but he felt it wouldnt do the subject material justice (not verbatim) or words to that effect. You first start watching Flags (FOOF) and Im sorry to say it wasnt that great 2 - 3 stars, sure it was meant to be different but I felt too much civy street side was portrayed. Still nevertheless a must watch prior to Battle (BFIJ). BFIJ I have to say was a masterpiece, truly a 5 star. I am not Japanese or in anyway biased for them. Nearly all dialogue was in Japanese. It so encompassed the Japanese mentality of the time and makes the rest of us understand their motives even if we never agreed with them.
About the blu ray, it was ok but nothing special. I think the battle scenes were deliberately done that way. FOOF is richer in color then BFIJ. I have a 50" plasma and frankly would have preferred a 16:9 version full screen then the 2:35 but thats a personal preference. So if you go for the DVD and not Blu Ray I dont think you will be missing out on much.
