Powerful, well-woven tale of unsaid truths,
This review is from: On Chesil Beach (Paperback)
This book is simple, unvarnished poetry. Many complex threads below the surface allow the reader to only glimpse at what make both protagonists so exquisite. McEwan's choice of period is inspired.
The telling of On Cheshil Beach itself leaves a lot unsaid, reflecting the plight of the young couple. The use of an exposed, barren beach, story and abrupt ending is perfect construction.
Only after the last page does "wonderful... exquisite... devastating" ring true. I'd add beautiful too, as this is a beautifully crafted piece that you will not quickly forget.
