I guess we have all, at one time or another, regretted our lack of willpower (self-control, self-regulation), whether with studying; giving up a detrimental habit or just in getting to the gym to justify our membership.
This work by Roy Baumeister, a scientist involved in research into Willpower, and John Tierney, a science journalist, explores the scientific background to willpower and also looks at means of improving our willpower. For example there is the idea of ego-depletion which shows that willpower is an exhaustible resource that can be used up and as such, needs to be used with care. It is also interesting to see that glucose depletion can negatively impact on willpower in a major way, so don't make big decisions when you are hungry (and don't skip breakfast in your rush to an important meeting).
Given the importance of willpower to so many aspects of our lives this is a valuable work that everyone can probably take lessons from. Well worth a read.
