This engaging book illustrates well the fragility of life in 1930's and 40's Germany and then Paris for those 'outside' accepted society - especially, in this story, blacks (even those born in Germany and speaking perfect German) and jazz musicians. It is beautifully and sympathetically written and although the impending twist in the tail is evident, it isn't the twist I expected. How easily what appears to be a small transgression can become something much bigger!
The descriptions of the characters and their development, and of course the music, and the rolling pace of the plot all add up to a beautiful read. I loved it!
