This book does something very different with war.
Pvt Lynch tells the story of the great war in a very natural prose, never over remarking or getting excited, just telling it like it was a normal part of his life for 4 years.
It is this normality which captures the essence of the book, he never tries to exaggerate, but in so doing he produces a very profound and visceral account of the great war.
i often read books about the two world wars, and I have to say that i found this book to be inspiring to say the least, that a man in such abnormal circumstances, is stil able to tell the story as we would tell another about our less than exciting day.
For anyone who's interested in the soldiers' great war, or just a frank account of life on the Western front, this book is a must read.
