William Hussey's latest teenage novel is based upon the idea that Thomas Edison did actually invent a machine for communicating with the dead. However Hussey takes that premise and builds on it so that the device actually releases the deceased. The town of Milton Lake and its inhabitants becomes a gateway for the unmade to pass through to the world of the living as the 'Ghost Machine' has fallen into unskilled hands.
Local teenager Emma Rhodes teams up with a mysterious boy with an intriguing past who is freshly arrived in the town and together they set out on a mission to try and discover just who is behind the increasingly horrific events that unfold.
The plot developments come thick and fast, and there are a few surprising twists along the way. Hussey has a fine command of dialogue and characterisation and the flashback strands are particularly well handled. This is a well written and thoroughly entertaining read and one that might give some readers a sleepless night or two.
