Not as tough as you might hope,
This review is from: Motorola DEFY Mini Sim Free Smartphone - Black Slate and Tangerine (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I bought this phone because I was looking for a waterproof phone for my girlfriend, since she has managed to drown 4 so far this year alone. I searched for waterproof phones, and came across reviews of the Motorola DEFY which made it sound like a great solution for her loveable eccentricities, then looked for one to buy. The DEFY MINI was cheaper, and I concluded that a smaller phone was less likely to fall out of her pocket into the toilet, so I ordered one. Upon receiving it I looked in the manual and noted that the claims about 'Water Resistance' seemed rather understated, so I went back to Google and searched for more information. It turns out that the DEFY MINI does NOT have the same waterproof rating that its (only very slightly) larger brothers do, and is in fact barely resistant to water at all (the manual only claims it will survive exposure to 'light showers of rain', which is true of most phones anyway).
So I'm left with a somewhat underpowered phone, surprisingly clunky phone with a not very responsive screen and extremely limited internal storage space for applications, that will probably end up dying a drowned death just like the cheaper phones she has destroyed this year.
As an entry level Android phone it is passable, though it runs a fairly old version of Android. It should fill the basic requirements of making calls and sending me photos via What'sApp, for however long she is able to resist putting it in the washing machine at leat. I do feel that I have been Bait and Switched by Motorola though, since it does not have the same 'life proof' specifications as the other phones in the DEFY range, and this is not made nearly clear enough from their promotional efforts. If they can't offer the same features, they shouldn't use the same name, which can only serve to confuse and disappoint customers whose aquaphiliac girlfriends will doubtless end up needing yet another new phone in another month or two.
