This review is from: The Last Legionary: Life as a Roman Soldier in Britain AD400 (Paperback)
I was hesitant to purchase this as my own interest in the Late Roman period brings with it some entrenched ideas but on reading it I can only say how well written and informative this work is. There is a skilfull balance between using historical sources and guess-work married to a re-enactor's practical application - and this brings to the book a confident tone. I never felt that I was being preached to buy a fanatic but invited into a journey into the Late Roman British period through one man's passion and the 'character' of the last legionary. It is these three elements - the research, the re-enactment and the fictional narrative - which really makes the book work. I can only highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in both the Roman military and the fall of Britiain.
