Out of ideas (except for survival),
This review is from: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
It's natural to expect great things from a sequel, especially with the media hyping it for six months before the release date, but I sometimes think that this puts too much pressure on games developers, and they end up trying too hard and making a complete mess of it. I think Modern Warfare 3 has some good and bad points, but ultimately it just isn't a good game.
The campaign, to begin with, is just completely stupid, boring and repetitive. Call of Duty 4's campaign was fantastic and did much to bring 21st century soldiering to life; the characters were great and the story could have been real. But in Modern Warfare 2 and 3 we lose that old adage of "less is more" for complete mayhem and carnage, which is just ridiculous and should be better placed in a comic strip. Tearing around Hudson River (was that where it was? I can't even remember) in a dingy while the entire Russian navy was blowing up all around just reminded me of a naff James Bond film or Indianna Jones or something. Then, while Russia is busily invading the United States, it invades Europe, too. This is fantasy fiction that couldn't even be pulled off in a Tom Clancy novel.
Online multiplayer game play has lost something too. There's no skill needed whatsoever, as the best player is inherently the person with the best internet connection; the maps just aren't fun; EVERYONE camps like hell - this is not what gaming is about! I suppose it's reputation for being aimed at children isn't a myth after all. If you wanted this you'd just play MW2, which is in fact better.
The survival mode and Spec Ops are great fun to play with friends online however, and I've spent many an hour blasting juggernauts, attack dogs, helicopters and suicide bombers with every weapon conceivable. But I didn't buy this game for Spec Ops, I bought it to play online, and playing online is not fun.
