Customer Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Indefinable Magic, 29 April 2010
This review is from: Indefinable Magic (Doctor Who: Short Trips) (Hardcover)
'Indefinable Magic' is the twenty-eighth (and, barring a 'best of' collection, the last) in Big Finish's range of Doctor Who anthologies, featuring eighteen more short stories of the first eight Doctors.

The phrase 'indefinable magic' is one of those hoary old cliche's from Doctor Who fandom, a slightly lazy shorthand to describe some sort of quintissential 'Who-ness' that embodies the series. In terms of this anthology however, it describes the ideological clash between magic and science. In standard Doctor Who fashion, magic is seen as merely unexplained science, though a number of stories here add a cheeky hint that maybe there's more to the fantastic than the Doctor himself chooses to see...

Inevitably the quality of the actual stories is varied, but the overall standard is high, with only a couple of stories that seem to be going through the motions. Highlights include the 1st Doctor, Steven and Vicki landing on a planet where colonists mine an elixir that grants superpowers in Eddie Robson's 'The Power Supply'; the 2nd Doctor exposing the truth behind a woman's eerily accurate horoscope in Ian Farrington's 'Favourite Star'; the 6th Doctor and Peri going to Las Vegas to meet Elvis Presley in Cavan Scott and Mark Wright's 'Priceless Junk'; and best of all Caleb Woodbridge's 4th Doctor and Sarah story 'Blessed Are The Peacemakers', with the religious clash of the Crusades being thrown into sharp relief by the arrival of alien insects who want to everyone to listen to their Truth.

A good end to the series, and well worth picking up - if you can find it at the right price!
