Dredd as the fans have always wanted to see him,
This review is from: Dredd [DVD] (DVD)'Dredd' is AWESOME. It is everything that fans of the comic have been waiting for. The original story, in '2000AD', was founded on a question: What would the world be like if, instead of intervening to solve any of our problems, we just let them gradually get worse for a hundred years?
Here is the answer, in slo-mo so you don't miss anything. Mega-City One is superbly realised as a relentlessly terrifying ghetto at the scale of a nation-state, in which hundreds of millions of people are trapped with nothing to do except avoid chronic boredom and getting killed.
Karl Urban as Dredd really is 'Old Stony Face', the hardened senior street judge meting out violence to all comers without a second thought. His gun is the one in the comic, his uniform is the one in the comic, his whole persona (he never changes, he never smiles, he never backs down) is just as it is in the comic.
Olivia Thirlby as final-year Cadet Judge Cassandra Anderson is also superb. An early scene in which Dredd reminds her to carry out 'appropriate sentencing' is truly harrowing, and sets the scene for all that follows. The horror lies in understanding that, yes, in such a dystopia, these authoritarian killers ARE the good guys.
With mind-blowing sets and FX, it is best seen in 3D at a cinema, but this DVD will have to do until it gets another airing. Have a stiff drink first to steady your nerves, I'm not kidding!
A triumph, five stars! Bring on the sequel, with the same cast and crew: 'The Apocalypse War' or 'Judge Death' or , PLEASE, 'America'!
