This book had me hooked from the start. In fact, I read it in two days – couldn’t put it down! It’s well written and easy to read, which made it the more enjoyable as you’re not bombarded with highfaluting words which tend to take over and stand out more than the story.
There are so many times the reader will think, if the family had only…. If the family had only left Versailles when they had the chance. If the family had only chosen a lighter and faster carriage when they did finally decide to escape. If only ….
There is nothing happy about the life of Louis-Charles once he is wrenched from his mother’s arms at the tender age of eight in the Temple Prison, and the feeling of awfulness, despair and violent abuse this little boy experienced, is made worse by us knowing that this is not a work of fiction. I challenge any mother or father to read this book and not be touched.
