This review is from: Dollhouse: The Complete Series (Seasons One & Two) [DVD] (DVD)I had high expectations of Dollhouse and indeed was pleasantly surprised after watching the first couple of episodes. Unfortunately I ended up watching the latter episodes of Season 1 and the whole of Season 2 more out of a grim sense of determination ('I've paid for it so I'll watch it') than out of any real enjoyment.
Don't get me wrong; there are many good moments in Dollhouse but there are many, many more bad or even awful ones, the kind where you groan with dismay at the screen as yet another example of unbelievable clunky plotting, tin-eared dialogue or a plot-driven character twist of the most cringe-inducing kind assaults your senses.
Giving Joss Whedon the benefit of the doubt, the whole thing has the muddy hoof-prints of idiot Fox executives all over it: 'Joss baby, more fight scenes! More female flesh! And you know you said that character would never suddenly do that in the next episode? Well, I liked it so put it in. That's a dealbreaker. And this may just be a personal thing of mine but some really violent scenes of women getting beaten up would kinda make me hot, you know? We can have the babes get their revenge later on so the viewers don't freak out but I need to see many, many scenes of hot chicks getting smashed up, OK? Preferably in their f***ing underwear. Sorry, is my tongue hanging out? Yeah, it's kinda hot in here.'
