Beautifully illustrated book,
This review is from: The Heffalump Grump (Hardcover)
I have an 18 month old daughter who has started to throw "heffalump grump"s and when I read this book, which we had on loan from the library, she was transfixed. If she was older then I don't think I would read it to hear because it is about a lion cub who escalates in to a tantrum because he can't find his teddy. His parents don't know what is wrong with him and try everything to make him calm down. In the end his Gran calms him down by inadvertantly giving him what he wants. I'm trying to teach her to ask for things not just whine and point and not to throw tantrums but if I whine like I do when I read this book she stops because she makes the connection and is amused. When she has reasoning skills I will explain that she needs to verbalise what she needs rather than just cry and wait to be given them.
This book is very bright and colourful. The illustrations are creative in a collage style and have well known objects on every page for children to identify and keep them interested. This is without a doubt the most beautifully illustrated book I have ever read and I have taught esl children for 5 years so I have read plenty.
