Bert Simpson's life is a kaleidoscope of ups and downs; after a happy early childhood he loses his mother at a tender age, he goes to live with his grandmother and he faces the realities of wartime hardship. As an adult he experiences heartbreak and tragedy early in his marriage. To cap it all he is accused of a murder he did not commit and is sentenced to life imprisonment.
In prison he makes some very unusual friends who manage to boost his low esteem and start him back on the road to recovery. In the most unlikely of places Bert Simpson finds justice and true love.
The book also deals with the delightful cameo of the personal life of the investigating detective and his progress from murder investigation to meeting the woman of his dreams.
