This review is from: The Leopard Lounge Presents.. Esther Phillips The Atlantic Years (International Release) (Audio CD)
Esther Philips began as a child star mentored by Johnny Otis and at the time was a straight ahead blues singer who appeared on the R & B chart. In the U K she was unknown till 1962-in fact nothing was ever issued here until she'd reinvented herself as a bona fide country singer recording for the Lennox label (owned by Lelan Rogers, brother of the more famous Kenny who at the time was between the Scholars and the New Christy Mistrels). Here there's another version of the song Release Me though the only single from this collection of mainly standards was the Beatles' song And I Love Him.A hit single in the States but not here but the singer appeared on a TV show called Around The Beatles
Atlantic was the scene of her 2nd reinvention as what is now called a Lounge Artist and is favorably comparable to Ketty Lester and Nancy Wilson.
By the time Esther Philips had a U K hit it was with a disco styled version of What A Difference A Day Made
But this was her greatest period
