This review is from: Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360) (Video Game)
After playing this game for over a month now, fully completing single player and getting a good start in multiplayer, I have to say I am disappointed with this game, to say the least. Especially when compared to the masterpiece that is Call of Duty 4.
It seems that this is a step back in terms of gameplay from COD4. There are countless games set during this era (Medal of Honor, etc), and after a while it becomes a bit repetitive. This missions are all very linear, which is most likely to be expected for a FPS, but there seems there is little need for tactics such a flanking and it often becomes very repetitive.
It also becomes very frustrating, especially on the higher difficulties. Enemies are infinite on certain areas until you reach a certain invisible point, or an objective is complete, which forces you to be in the thick of the action always, and doesn't suit people who prefer a more timed and stealthy approach. This becomes frustrating when you are forced to charge into areas and hope you don't get shot, and it seems there is a large element of luck and patience involved, just to complete missions, rather than skill. I should also mention that your teammates are very lacking, deciding to just follow you - the lowest ranking soldier, seeming very lifeless and devoid of character, unlike the characters in COD4 which you love by the end.
Vehicle missions are a nice touch which break up the repetitiveness.
Coop mode is pretty much useless. Very few of the achievements can be gained through coop, and there is no way in which you benefit each other, unlike games such as Gears of War and Halo.
This, in my opinion is what disappoints me most about this game. The style is taken literally from COD4, same perks, same levels with a few added extra. The guns are rather disappointing, seeming rather clunky and weak.
Vehicles have been added, which I believe unbalances the game entirely. Any player - good or bad - can get into a tank and dominate a map. If a team controls all the tanks on a map, in becomes impossible to retaliate. Requiring at least 3 shots from a bazooka or other tank, and having a main gun that kills in a single shot, it seems to me that tanks ruin the flow of a game.
As expected, you are going to encounter a wide range of skill bases when playing online. With no matchmaking based on skill, it seems that if you are stuck on a poor team, the enemy can overwhelm you with artillery strikes and dogs without letting you get a foothold in a game. Also, after getting rid of the team tactical mode from the previous game, there is no way play a game just with your friends without having a full team of 6.
With the increase in levels from 55 to 65, it seems that prestige is much more of a chore, and you may be reluctant to give up your hard earned weapons just for a new symbol and extra class slots.
My advice to anyone is:
- If you don't have Call of Duty 4, buy that - you won't be disappointed!
- If you do have COD4, this game may be worth a try to occupy you for a few weeks, but in the long term, I think you will be disappointed compared to COD4.
