This review is from: What Went Wrong?: The Clash between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East (Hardcover)
This is an influential book which has been extensively reviewed and commented on in the press in view of its relevence to the current war on (mainly Islamic) terrorism. It is very lucid and readable although it assumes considerable historical knowledge in the reader.
However, it takes too negative a view about modern Islam. It ignores the success and development of some Islamic countries in the Gulf Cooperative Council and the fact that two recent Nobel Prize readers are Arabs. (As reported in the Daily Telegraph.)
The chapter,"Conclusion" is only ten pages long and addresses the question, "who did this to us?"
Then just one page from the end the question is posed,"how do we put it right?" ie, how can Islamic countries take their rightful place in the world and how can Islamic minorities live comfortably in non-Islamic countries? Professor Lewis' answer is that "the choice is their own." This is disappointing and not really helpful in the circumstances and the reason why this book scores only four stars!
