Funny musical romance,
This review is from: Romance With a Double Bass [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
This delightful little film is based, rather surprisingly, on a short story by Chekhov. John Cleese is a put-upon double bass player in an orchestra which has been engaged to play at the betrothal party of a Princess (Connie Booth). When Cleese arrives early he is turned away by a haughty footman, so he goes off to sit by the lake. As it's a hot day, he soon succumbs to temptation and goes for a swim. Unknown to him, the Princess is also bathing in the lake, and while they are both enjoying themselves, their clothes are stolen by a passing thief. Cleese is faced with the daunting task of getting himself, the Princess, and his double bass back to the house without anyone seeing them. In the course of their harrowing jounrey, a touching relationship develops between Cleese and Booth, as they find a mutual interest in music (the Princess is learning to play the recorder). This is a short but very amusing film, Cleese and Booth are both excellent, and there are some quite hilarious moments.
