This 4-CD set is a "must-have" for Bach collectors,
This review is from: JS Bach - Well Tempered Clavier [harpsichord] (Audio CD)
As the other reviewers here say, and I completely agree with them, this is unquestionably a great recording by Pieter-Jan Belder of Bach's sublime "well-tempered clavier". Played, correctly, on a harpsichord that just sounds, well, great - Brilliant Classics engineer and producer have given us what must be one of the best harpsichord recordings ever. And all for a tenner or so!
This set renders many older recordings into the "historical interest" category, such as the redoubtable Kenneth Gilbert set Bach - Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, bks. 1 & 2, to name but one example.
Despite regarding the harpsichord the way to go in these pieces, I enjoy Bach on the piano, too, and one can turn to Pollini Bach, J.S.: The well-tempered Clavier, Till Fellner Bach: Well-Tempered Clavier, and the decidedly archival Edwin Fischer Bach - Das wohltemperierte Klavier (this older EMI References having the best sound quality), to name but three glorious recordings.
Pieter-Jan Belder has made many good recordings (his Scarlatti "cube" Scarlatti: Complete Keyboard Works is entirely complimentary to the much-missed genius of Scott Ross [[ASIN:B0009MWAVQ Scarlatti - Complete Keyboard Sonatas]), but this is surely his best yet.
Do not hesitate, you really won't be disappointed!
