A practical book with great advice, but with flaws,
This review is from: Social Media 101: Tactics and Tips to Develop Your Business Online (Hardcover)
This is a book with a number of flaws, but also a very practical book that has some great nuggets of advice.
The flaws stem from the fact that it has been compiled from Chris Brogan's blog posts. Chris write an excellent, widely read blog, but the book has been composed by taking 80 or so posts and turning them into chapters and adding a few more chapters to top and tail the book. The result is that there is a lack of flow through the chapters and a number of topics are repeated - what to put in your profile, advice on blogging and what to put on your 'about' page, for example.
Having said this, there are also a number of positives.
Firstly, the recommendations are very useful and the book is an excellent guide to how to write a blog, the best way to use Twitter, what to do in LinkedIn and the best tools to use ... to name but a few.
There are a number of helpful checklists on topics such blog topics, establishing a social media presence and how to use social media to improve marketing.
The book is very easy to read. Chris Brogan's style, because it is taken from his blog, is very informal, which I like and is certainly suited to the topic. The chapters are short and punchy, which makes them easy to read in a spare 10 minutes or on the train.
So overall, I recommend the book to anyone looking for advice on how to start out on using social media for business purposes, or how to improve their impact a few months in to using social media.
I'll be implementing a number of his suggestions!
