Nice idea, poorly handled.,
This review is from: Dead Snow [DVD] (DVD)
Firstly I'd like to stress this film is NOT in English and has optional sub-titles, as this is something I hadn't realised when I brought it.
Secondly the zombies here are not 'proper' Romero-style zombies as they run, climb and even speak. They actually reminded me of Scooby Doo style monsters that aren't really scary or threatening; and they seem motivated only by wanting to get back their cursed gold (like the "zombies" from Pirates of the Caribbean). Quite why zombies want gold is never explained - possibly they were hoping to go on a spending spree at some point ?
The low-budget effects and amateurish make-up I could overlook if the story was good, but sadly its just not...!
I hoped this would be about a Nazi experiment to create super-soldiers that went wrong, but no. How or why they became zombies is never explained, nor is there any reason given for why they suddenly pop-out after all this time. It doesn't really make any sense ?
There are a few reasonable action/gore moments however - though unfortunately these are only 'ok' because they recycle/recreate moments from the Evil Dead films, what this film seems to want to try and copy but somehow completely fails...
Theres a bit of black comedy too, such as one scene involving some self-inflicted limb-removal when one character has been bitten. This is immediately followed by the same person being bitten again but in a more 'intimate area' and then having something of a dilemma to think consider ! However what doesn't work in this particular example is why the characters automatically assume zombie bites are infectious and have to be speedily amputated ? They just leap to that conclusion rather than take a chance (possibly because its an idea used in better films...?).
Overall then - a big disappointment. Unconvincing gore, a very weak story filled with plot-holes and lots of annoying subtitles.
