Epitome of a cult comedy,
This review is from: Peep Show - Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
A lot of people have criminally ignored this fantastically innovative and funny comedy, or passed it by thinking it's another gimmicky fad with no real substance. Other people have simply not 'got it'. And that's understandable, because this is a series that is by its nature not going to appeal to everyone. It's heavy on the swearing for one, and much of the comedy cuts close to the bone involving a number of taboo subjects that may not sit well with some people. This is no holds barred comedy at its finest.
In fact its extreme accuracy to real life situations can get to the point where it can induce sheer cringeworthy pangs of remembrance. If you thought I'm Alan Partridge or The Office were bad try this on for size. The two main characters are played superbly and are both in their own way hilarious in their opposites. These truly are some of the finest comedic creations in modern comedy and, unusually, they come fully formed from episode one. The writers really knew exactly what they were doing from the start. Secondary performances are good too, and there are a number of brilliantly subtle touches throughout the series (Mark's 'Johnson' tache, Jeremy's hero worship of Superhands).
At its heart though this is simply a superbly crafted series and very, very funny. There are going to be a lot of people who just won't find this funny, and those that find it absolutely hilarious. Count yourself lucky if you fall into the latter category.
DVD extras are OK. They involve a couple of standalone scenes including a Big Brother audition tape and a video CV. There is also a commentary over two episodes, which is a bit odd and slightly dissapointing.
