This review is from: The Pyramid: Kurt Wallander (Paperback)
I was introduced to this splendid detective series by watching the Swedish TV series on BBC Four and wanted to read some of the books. I then saw that Henning Mankell, at the request of his fans, had retrospectively written this prequel book of stories about the early years of his detective, Wallander. It's a enjoyable introduction to the series and starts in the 1970s with a story when Wallander is in his early 20s, just starting as a policeman on the beat and wooing his wife-to-be, Mona. The book contains five different stories arranged chronologically from his first case up to 1990. They are excellent and well-crafted stories with the added interest that one sees Wallander evolve and mature into the gifted and thoughtful detective of his latter years. I shall certainly buy more of Henning Mankell's Wallander books as he is an exemplary story-teller and his eponymous detective is such a well-rounded and engaging character.
