We booked the flights to Japan quite last minute, and I wasn't sure if it was wise to organise our own tour, but after reading this book, I went ahead, The Japan Rail Pass is, indeed, the bargain of the century and really easy to use, recognised at even small stations. We had no problems at all - many signs are in English, there is usually someone who speaks a little English and Japan is such a logical country, that it is easy to work out where to go/what to do. This book gives loads of useful tips like how to behave in a ryokan, how to operate the toilets, as well as useful itineraries and day trip suggestions. Esssential reading.
