Sexist Man-hating Garbage.,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Beguiled [DVD] (DVD)
If you swapped genders on this film: and had a woman trapped in a boys school having bits amputated off her, Germaine Greer would birth an adult rhino in anger, the director would be lynched and the film studio burned down. Sadly, this precursor to the current mainstream Gyllenhaal-hollywood of today says it's ok to kick around, defeat, demoralize and decease an injured veteran main character, as long as they are white/male/hetero. But, the best review for this discouraging, depressing waste of time and money has to come from Clint Eastwood's own condeming comments of it: ""Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino play losers very well. But my audience like to be in there vicariously with a winner. That isn't always popular with critics. My characters have sensitivity and vulnerabilities, but they're still winners. I don't pretend to understand losers. When I read a script about a loser I think of people in life who are losers and they seem to want it that way. It's a compulsive philosophy with them. Winners tell themselves, I'm as bright as the next person. I can do it. Nothing can stop me." - Clint Eastwood, commenting on "The Beguiled". Watch something more positive. Avoid this hateful, mental poison.

I expect you intended your review seriously, but it's rather amusing that when the film first came out it was slammed by every feminist commentator as "a feast for sadists and woman-haters"! It's not as if the Eastwood character is an innocent fallen among wicked women. He's pretty much a creep. No one comes out of it very well, except perhaps the lovely Elizabeth Hartman. That's Southern Gothic for you. Everyone's weird. (I'm a man, by the way.) You don't have to like it, but you have to admit it's unusal and atmospheric.
