Highest Order Thrills,
This review is from: The Constant Gardener [DVD] (DVD)
Really good stuff. A cracking adaptation of Le Carre's source novel, which, in itself is a rarity - few novelists have seen their work so mangled so often.
This is a sharp, taut and intelligent thriller/drama that excites, entertains and informs.
The cast are uniformorly excellent - Ralph Fiennes gives a possible career best as the stiff upper lip hero, a smooth, acceptable public face rapidilly unravelling inside. it's a masterclass of understated performance. Rachel Weisz also scores well as his liberal free thinking wife, our need to find her killers (not a spoiler - happens at the very start) is intensified by each and every flashback. It is a performance well worthy of the oscar nod. Bill Nighy scores highly also as do the rest of the strong, well chosen supporting cast. (Pete Poselthwaite may sport a ridiculous accent but his emoting is top drawer).
The story, and the script, is well realised, fresh and exciting. It also educates without losing the dramtic thrust of the plot and cover both philosophical and moral ground without stretching as far as to fingerpoint.
The direction and, most impressively, the cinematography are spot on and sensitive. This is an approchable film that rewards far beyond what may be expected.
Brokeback mountain & Crash my have won all the accolades and awards come silly season but this was an undoubted winner.
At the current price, this is an absolute must have.
