This review is from: Soul Calibur V (PS3) (Video Game)
I was given a PS3 for Christmas, and needed some new games for it. My favourite PS2 game was Soul Calibur 3. The graphics were great, I loved the characters, and there was so much to do. The Chronicles of the Sword mode was a brilliant addition, and the controls made it easy to learn but hard to master. When I heard about Soul Calibur 5, I clicked "Add to Basket" immediately.
What happened Namco? Why did you decide to drop the cool Weapon Master Mode and Chronicles of the Sword Mode and replace them with...nothing. Why did you decide to make all the characters sound American despite the fact that none of them are American? Ivy is the exception, and her accept couldn't be more stereotypical if she exclaimed "What Ho!" every time she attacked someone. You could have had them speak their native languages, like Tekken. Why did you get rid of classic characters like Talim, and completely ruin Nightmare? Why doesn't each character get their own Arcade Mode endings? Seriously, that's just lazy.
To be fair, the fighting is still solid, and the character customisation and creation is good fun. The online fighting's pretty good too.
But that's not enough good points. Namco, I expect better from you. If you're a fan of Soul Calibur, just buy a used copy of 3 or 2. They both still play really well, and are much better games. This isn't amazing. It's not bad, but it could've been so much more. Soul Calibur 6 had better be brilliant, otherwise this franchise is finished.
My mark: 6.5/10. Not bad, but not good.
