4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money upgrade, 8 Feb 2009
This review is from: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo Processor - 3.00 GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB, Socket LGA775, 45 nm, 3 Year Warranty, Retail Boxed (Accessory)
Have a MythTV setup with a server streaming my TV contents and videos to my PCs/frontends. I recently bought a 1080p LCD TV for my living room and a Blueray internal writer for my living room HTPC. Unfortunately when running HD content it was clear that the CPU I had even though dual core was not powerful enough. So instead I bought this CPU. Now I can watch HD content without any problems and I even tried a few more power hungry games and combined with my graphics card it has no problems to deal with these either. So a good buy.
Of course make sure you check that your motherboard has the right frequency so it can power this CPU - check motherboard manual/homepage. I fell into this basic trap and had to buy a new motherboard as well (and I thought I knew something about computers;-)).

M. Carter says:
You mean clock speed? E8400 is 3 gHz per core.

No he does not mean the clock speed. He means that you need to get a motherboard that can handle the 1333mhz front side bus that this processor uses. All Intel P45 chipset motherboards can handle this. For older chipsets like the P35 and 965 chipsets you will need to check the manufacturers info. Only the very last revisions of P965 boards can handle this chip, but quite a few P35 boards are ok, tho not all - any EP35 board is defo ok with this chip. Sorry I can't tell you about which nVidia chipsets work with this chip.
