5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss it - a smashing card at a great price, 16 Aug. 2011
This review is from: XFX ATI Radeon HD6870 Graphics Card PCI-e 1024 MB GDDR5 Memory (Personal Computers)
At this price the 6870 is a must-have, unless you are into some seriously hard-code graphics and *MUST* have the absolute top-of-the-range.

For most users, it provides more than enough oomph, rating 7.8 on my Win7-64 performance index. I used this to replace a GTX 280 that rated 7.1, used much more power, and ran insanely hot. The 6870 stays nice and cool, nearer 40 Celsius (the 280 was 75 Celsius).

Additionally, this card has plenty of outputs. Note that one of the DVI is a single, so you won't be able to drive 2 massive monitors on the DVIs - but if you use the mini DP ports you should be fine.

When I powered up after installing this, I thought I'd forgotten to reconnect the power - the silence was deafening. It turns out I'd just become accustomed to the much noisier 280, and now my PC seems eerily quiet.

The only downside is that in the winter I might need to turn the central heating on now, since the 280 is no longer serving that function for me.

Hahaha, as an owner of a GTX 280 this review had me laughing, Jesus did that card get hot! I think mine's on the fritz, it's idling at 50-60 and breaching 100 in games! Probably due to 3 years worth of dust accumulating in it due to A) me not wanting to spend £12 for a can of air in Maplins and B) not checking amazon and finding 5 Star Air Duster Can HFC Free Compressed Gas Flammable 400ml for 40 pence! (plus shipping of course, but 40p!! I bought five!). I've recently downgraded to an HD3450 as the other PC was out of service and this card runs almost as hot, 75ºc+, due to it being fanless. I think I'll need to take a sunny holiday this year, otherwise I may never feel the heat again after this week!

Many thanks for taking the time to write this review, thanks to it I have a new GPU on its way!
