A strange album with none of the immediacy of Alligator or Boxer or stand out classic tracks like Start a War or Daughters of the Soho Riots. The lyrics are as impenetrable as ever with the National, and I am old enough to be slightly disturbed by some of the graphic sexual content of the lyrics. Having said all that this album has all the luxurious drama and coolness of previous albums, A consistently dark atmosphere and voice pervades as would be expected. Like with Tindersticks you buy into a certain soundworld and sensibility or you don't. Being a sucker for this kind of sound I do, and few bands do it better than the National. Best tracks for me are Runaway, with its extended choruses which will go down a storm in concerts, and England which has that grand epic quality which you find in the best National numbers. Despite some reservations I believe that the album surpasses most of which is going on at the moment and National fans won't want to miss it.
