Ideal for travel, but not the ultimate UWA,
This review is from: Olympus M.ZUIKO Digital ED 9-18mm 1:4.0-5.6 Lens - Black (Camera)
Take however small you think this lens could possibly be, then imagine it even smaller. Nope, it's smaller than that.
I was actually shocked when I opened the box, this lens is about the same length when retracted as a normal 50mm prime for full frame, but smaller diameter, it also weighs nothing.
I'm used to full frame lense and for once I'm actually pleased a lens is plastic, yes, it makes it feel like poorer value for money but in terms of m43 as a travel friendly format it's ideal.
The lens will happily take filters, unlike the Panasonic 7-14mm, and if you don't need the widest possble angle of view I'd say this lens represents much better value, however when you look at the quality you get from something like a Canon 17-40 f4L they both look like a bit of a rip off.
Image quality is good, but not exceptional. Distortion is kept well controlled, however CA fringing is quite bad at the edges... it can be fixed pretty easily in raw conversion though. It also focuses quickly and accurately, although on my E-P2 it struggles a little in low light.
Good lens, very, very portable and image quality is sound. My reservations come from the asking price (over £500 still at time of writing) and the quite strong fringing. Would definitely recommend it though, although it is one of only two options at ultra wide for the m43 system at present so you aren't exactly spoiled for choice!
