This review is from: Into the Night (Troubleshooters) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was intrigued to see that this book has invoked such a wide range of completely different reactions from die-hard Suzanne Brockmann fans.

Like other readers, I initially found this story the hardest in the series (so far) to get along with, and perhaps that is due to there being too many sub plots. Having said that, I loved the inclusion of another significant chapter in the long, slow build-up to Sam and Alyssa's story (Gone too Far).

Personally, I find the historical aspects less interesting, especially in this case as I felt that the main characters, Joan and Mike, desperately needed further development. However, as other readers clearly love them, perhaps the author would like to consider starting a new, wholly historical series, based on the navy frogmen, the "original" SEALS.

So, back to Joan and Mike. I've read this book three times now, and the last time I deliberately skipped all the sub plot text and concentrated wholly on the scenes involving the lead characters. In this less fragmented form, their story was rather short, but overall I gained a much better insight into their relationship and am puzzled as to why so many other readers have found them (especially Joan) to be inadequate.

Mike is gorgeous! Tall, broad and with male-model looks, plus he's superb at handling a team of highly confident, sassy SEALs. The fact that (for at least two good reasons) he's initially less adept when it comes to pursuing Joan is rather touching. But he gets there in the end, and I LOVED the way in which he engineered her surrender. And what's wrong with him being attracted to someone who's a little older with a strong personality? (cue those sexy references to what he'd REALLY like her to do to him!)

Joan isn't physically stunning (and if that's what you expect from a heroine, read Kenny and Savannah's or Sam and Alyssa's books) but I refuse to see her as the boring, overweight frump outlined by other reviewers. The other SEAL characters and their wives all quickly warm to her; she's bright, sharp and funny, and if she's rather direct and assertive, then you can attribute that to the fact that she works on the publicity team at the Whitehouse! But her discomfort with the age difference between herself and Mike, plus the uncertainty at the prospect of conducting a long-distance relationship (including the complication of juggling two demanding careers) is reasonable, and this is what drives her to try to keep Mike at arm's length.

So, give this book a chance; you might disagree with my comments, but then again, you just might see Joan and Mike in a different light.
