Billy Wilder - a Prolific Cinematic Genius,
This review is from: Billy Wilder Collection: Volume 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Billy Wilder either directed, or wrote - or both, dozens of some of the most fondly remembered and critically acclaimed films of all time.
Some are in this set - and many aren't. I'll leave out the omissions as I'm sure you can make up your own list and concentrate on those that are.
THE APARTMENT was winner of 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and stars Jack Lemmon, Fred MacMurray and a young Shirley MacLaine. It's about a central New York apartment that is let out to men who want a place to take young ladies for secret liaisons, but the plans get complicated and things all go wrong. A bitter-sweet classic.
THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is the comedy in which Marilyn Monroe gets all hot and bothered in an apartment upstairs from a married man, whose wife and children are away. Does he give in to his fixation for her?
WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION is one of the finest courtroom dramas ever made. A wealth of stars - Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich and Tyrone Power - make this twisting favourite very watchable. Nominated for six Oscars.
THE FORTUNE COOKIE - one of my favourites and so ahead of its time. Jack Lemmon gets injured as a bystander at a football game and lands up in traction. Chum Walter Matthau, known as 'Whiplash Willie' sees only dollar signs and lawsuits. Roll on the comedy as the pair conspire to get all that they can.
THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is rather different to the others - and indeed to other Wilder films. Largely set in Scotland and might even include the Loch Ness Monster, this investigative drama is supremely well made, quite Hitchkockian and stunningly shot in colour.
In short, there's something here for all tastes. It's unlikely that most people would have seen all five before, so prepare to be entertained! The DVDs are all in slimline cases, within a card box. At roughly two pounds a movie, this is also an absolute bargain.
