Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Greatest Show On Earth [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Dodgy vocals ...yes, I really dont like his voice at all , but thankfully the album is mostly instrumental.

Musically its early Porcupine Tree meets Pink Floyd.

Derivative as be damned , but hey.....when it sounds this good who cares.

Only pain is lack of an mp3 download with the vinyl.

Yet again I am commenting on one of your reviews Michael :).

"Derivative as be damned...". lol Very true. Think Fish's "Shadowplay" from Internal Exile for the riff on "Surveillance (part 1). And surely Rick Wright has been resurrected to play the opening of "Silence Grows" (reference "Wet Dream"). And Metallica's input in the middle of the last track is spooky (reference "Sad But True" meets "Enter Sandman").

Lots of changes in tempo and mood a la Porcupine Tree - especially on the last track (think of the long version of "Radioactive Toy"). [added] Also on the last track is a clear homage to Floyd's "Animals" towards the end.

I do like this album but it's a little bit too close to being "All Rights Removed II" and, in part, it's as if the band was either struggling for ideas or trying just a little too hard. However, EONS better than BJH's "North".

The more I listen to it, the more I love it. Sounds far far better on vinyl than on the mp3 (worked out how to use the amazon rip service - you`d be buggered if you had bought from another seller. I have ordered the other tow albums on the strength of it. I still think the vocals are the weak link (oddly actually stronger on the first album) , but no matter - the instruments are simply lush.

In case you don't know, there is other (original) material pre-"Identity" - see my comment to the 5* review by "R. Holmes" for info. Happy listening.
