A glowing little book!,
This review is from: The Allen Book of Painting and Drawing Horses (Paperback)
I feel I have to write a review in defence of this beautiful book!!!
This book has been with me for nearly 10 years. It is concise, atmospheric and the paintings glow from the inside, rather than the 'flat', lifeless horses in so many other drawing and painting guides. This being, undoubtedly because of the author's love and experience with the subject matter, but yes, apart from the perspective techniques and certain pencil drawings I would specify it as a non-beginners book. However, one thing this book does have is plenty of 'unfinished' drawings, whereby the student can work out the different layers of the painting, from line drawing, to pencil shading, through to watercolour pencils and finally acrylic/oil (if nessecary- I'm more a plain watercolour fan myself). I found this extremely useful in building texture. For me, this book has always been an inspiration and one I turn back to time and time again when I get artists block. For serious students, I would also recommend having a look at da Vinci's horse drawings- they are absolutely stunning!
