Cheesy & monster-packed - what more do you want?!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Godzilla: Final Wars - Region 2 (DVD)
I bought this as I love the old Toho godzillas, even though it's incredibly hard to find UK format DVDs of them (loads of NTSC versions, no PAL ones, so unless you have a region-free DVD player you're stuck), and this was one of the few UK-compatible ones around. It's got Polish subtitles, but is dubbed in English and so perfectly understandable.
As for the plot - well, it does everything you'd expect from a Toho style Godzilla film, but with better effects - although still the classically cheesy 'men in suits' type monsters, I hasten to add, as where would the fun be without them?! The basic premise of the film is that Godzilla's lain buried in ice for the past few decades after being 'put there' by us humans, so he's fairly annoyed at us, it's fair to say (!), and in that time, mutant humans have evolved with amazing fighting skills (martial arts style). However, as you'd expect, an evil character arrives who has trapped a load of evil monsters, and releases them one by one into all the major cities of the world to wreak havoc, and of course the mutant humans plus Godzilla come out to destroy them. All good stuff.
I have to warn any parents buying this for kids that there are a couple of scenes of 'minor' swear-word usages in it (literally only a couple), plus there are a couple of slightly scary bits, so it's definitely not one for very young kids!
However, aside from that, it's got all the classic monsters you'll remember from the 60s & 70s films - the armadillo that rolls into a ball of spikes, an octopus, a giant moth (Mothra, I think it's called), one my daughter calls "the doggy dinosaur", which looks like a giant, angry pug, basically (!), a snapping dinosaur-type one, a baby godzilla... and a few robot ones with chainsaw hands! All very very good, very entertaining stuff, with the expected cheesy dialogue and slightly cheesy effects, but in a good way!
We love this film!
