This review is from: Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter books, as well as the first film, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". Before the release of the second film, I was eager to see if Chris Columbus could perform magic and produce something to please all of the fans of Harry Potter, both young and old. In my opinion, he definitely has.
As you would expect, The Chamber of Secrets" is quite similar to The Philosopher's Stone; the same characters of course (with the addition of Lockhart and Dobby), and to a certain extent the plot follows a similar pattern. However, the second film has certainly seen a progression in the development of both the story and the characters. Each book follows one year from the school, and this is well reflected in this film. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have all grown in confidence since the first film and this is shown, I think, by their performances. Their on-screen friendship has definitley deepened, setting up developments for the following films to come.
Young fans of Harry Potter were bound to love this film almost before it came to screen, but I think this film also has things for older viewers to enjoy. There is much more humour in this film, partly due to Kenneth Branagh's brilliant performance as Gilderoy Lockhart, a celebrity in the world of witches and wizards, and the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.
As another reviewer said, these films are bound to be considered as some of the best kid's films made for a long time yet. And it is easy to understand why; there is humour, magic, good against evil, fantasy and mild horror (those scared of spiders will know what I mean). What more could you possibly want?
