3.0 out of 5 stars Meshuggah have become 'Just another Metal band', 21 Mar. 2008
By
This review is from: Obzen (Audio CD)
I remember hearing a Marten Hagstrom interview once when he said something along the lines of this... "Our latest stuff - 'I' and 'Catch 33' - are definitely in the area of where we feel happiest, and where we want to go".

Obviously being a massive fan of both these 'extended tracks', as well as Thordendal's 'Sol Niger Within', i heard this and couldnt wait for their next release. You can imagine my disappointment then when i finally got to hear the delayed 'obZen'.

Its not that the Songs are short; Chaosphere and Nothing were in the same format, and are probably two of the most inventive Metal albums of all time. Its that there is a definite lack of the inventiveness which used to set Meshuggah out from the pack.

The rest of the metal world (and beyond) has noticeably become more adventurous with compound time-signatures and such over the past few years, quite probably inspired by Meshuggah in the first place, and so obZen has the feeling that its meeting the rest of the pack in the middle. This might seem a bit dramatic but, for me, Meshuggah have become just another Metal band - heartbreaking.

This is really good album from Meshuggah with brain-melting polyrythems to die for.

I believe after reading interviews that Marten is more the groove side of the band that I love but Obzen is so good that I can't help but disagree even after listening to most of the thrash metal around. There really is no better band around at the moment and the album is just as technical if not more so by the small nuances that permeate the record.

Obzen is quite simply one the finest metal albums ever recorded, a once in a lifetime recording. No one else could have made an album like this - no one. A work of untouchable brilliance.
