Unusual, gentle, wholesome sci-fi drama,
This review is from: The Host [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This isn't a film that you'd enjoy if you only like your science fiction with lots of spandex, space battles and explosions, but if you're an SF fan looking for something a little off the beaten track, you might find it worth a try. I valued it for its distinctly better than average acting, its humour, its coolly elegant design (beautifully served by Blu-ray), its child-friendly rating and above all the spirit of affirmation at its core. (Not to mention its gorgeous chromium sports cars!) At a time when so much SF is violent or dystopian, it's refreshing to see the genre being used to celebrate understanding, self-sacrifice, hope and love. Admittedly, the pacing of the film probably does err a bit on the deliberate side: but given the thoughtful, romantic nature of the story that it tells, I can't see how it could have been otherwise. An underrated drama that's a treat for both the eye and the heart.
