5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, 14 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Way Of All Flesh (Includes CD Plus 16 Page Deluxe Booklet) (Audio CD)
just thought i'd add my thoughts.....and i want to start by saying this is definitely a five star album.

i read a lot of reviews before buying and i was expecting this to be the heaviest thing since lead was discovered. i'm into a lot of heavy bands, but still like a bit of melody. well truth be told gojira aren't really all that heavy.

great riffs, great intricate guitar work, and great screaming vocals, but most of the time you can still understand the lyrics. fans of decapitated, and other such HEAVY bands may want to look elsewhere.

this album would be right at home with fans of mastodon, and more specifically lamb of god. people into slipknot would also find a lot to like here as well.

very solid album. not too progressive. for my prog metal kicks i'd still turn to opeth or dream theater, (opeth obviously more death and DT more twiddly but both great). the way of all flesh is more lamb of god type progressive, i.e. great guitar work, but no drastic time changes or left-field acoustic breakdowns etc.

Wow... freakin WOW!!! I don't normally go out of my way to complain about another person's opinion online, but man what you said is clearly asinine. "Aren't really all that heavy?" Were you on drugs when you wrote this? "Right at home with Mastodon and Slipknot?!" That is almost insulting! You clearly were so brain damaged on drugs that you couldn't tell the difference between Lamb Of God (which are NOT progressive) and the MASTERPIECE (and one of the heaviest metal albums of the past decade) that is "The Way Of All Flesh." Maybe you weren't listening loud enough so lay off the acid, cocaine, whatever it is you're sniffing and shoving into your soon to be amputated arm and turn up the volume on your speakers, because this album will blow your eye sockets out of the back of your freakin head!!!!

ok ok chaostar. have you listened to 'ashes of the wake' by lamb of god? that's chock full of shortish progressive songs. there are also far heavier bands than gojira. maybe you have a limited metal collection, (maybe not, and you just LOVE this band) but certainly things like meshuggah are a lot heavier AND more complex - check out their album 'nothing'

and bands like decapitated, (they're secong album 'nihility' especially) are true prog death metal.

you might have noticed that i still like 'the way of all flesh' - i gave it 5* and a good review, it's just i went into it expecting prog metal greatness, and what i got was a good, kind of proggy album, with smooth guitar riffs etc, (prog metal to me is crazy time signatures - but still tuneful obviously - like decapitated) but nothing sensational.

i was actually just listening to this album the other day and it is great. it's got brilliant playing on it no doubt, the production is very very good, and the way the guys play is pretty unique - but then again i can listen to 'blood mountain' by mastodon and think the same thing; and that's a better album hands down. gojira are a very good band no doubt - and i'd like to highlight again that i gave this disc 5*, but it's just not mind blowing. the first time i listened to 'deliverence' by opeth/'ashes of the wake' by LOG or the aformentioned 'blood mountain' - well then i was very VERY impressed.

I disagree with practically everything you said. There's really no point in debating. Your opinion is imo asinine. You compared Gojira to Lamb Of God and Slipknot. That's freaking mental. Calling Decapitated and LOG progressive is mentally retarded. Listen to them more, compare them to older bands who pioneered the respected genres of metal that they play and even wikipedia them if you're unclear what genre they are, but please stop throwing the word progressive around. It makes you sound very pretentious.. Just read your posts again. "Meshuggah are a lot heavier and more complex" ..omfg dude just do yourself a favor and don't listen to Gojira. You clearly don't get it.

i'm sorry but who the **** are you to tell me what i should or shouldn't listen to? and also who do you think you are to throw around the words 'asinine' & prententious? if anything you sound prententious, lording it over with your superior opinion of metal/gojira/what progressive metal is.

my review/opinion can't be all bad cos 3/4 people thought the review was helpful(!)

for what it's worth i do not think that lamb of god are a prog-metal band, but certainly their ashes of the wake album has plenty of progressive elements, (just as many as gojira do). slipknot ARE NOT prog in any way, but as i said in my original review; 'knot fans may find something they like in gojira - and i stick to that assessment.

mastodon (in all their albums EXCEPT the hunter - which is rubbish) are far more inventive than gojira, (not to say gojira are bad - just not as good) and meshuggah ARE much more complex and FAR heavier than gojira could ever hope to be. go listen to 'nothing' by meshuggah and if you deny it then your wrong/the singer for gojira/on drugs yourself.

just go away you narrow minded abusive little man. i remind you i gave 'the way of all flesh' 5 stars. i like it, and i can listen to anything i want to and offer my opinion any time.
