4.0 out of 5 stars Still Better Than Most, 12 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Flesh & Blood (Audio CD)
This album definitely has a mellower and more introspective feel to it than earlier ones but you could see it was heading this way with April Uprising. The production has become slicker but to me this is to the detriment of missing the rawness from earlier albums and hearing JBT rip it up on the guitar. (same applies for Iron and Wines latest album) This might be due to increased influence of his wife and band members and him letting go of his work slightly but also due to being in a different place in his life. Id agree with the previous review that there arent any stand out songs like his other albums (maybe Only One apart), having said that if you watch the live acoustic performance of some of the songs on YouTube, such as Livin in the City and Only One they sound amazing and CD production sometimes takes something away from the music. I have no doubt performed live they would sound amazing as they always do from a JBT live performance.
In summary a very accomplished album, great lyrics and songwriting, and way way better than 99% of albums that will be out this year and JBT is still my favourite musician of all time (if anyone hasnt listened to his earlier albums please please do...and watch Ocean on Youtube, unbelievably good, ive seen Ocean live and the audience is hypnotised by it for over 10 minutes). However, the songs are too mellow and slick for me, when compared to Sunrise Over Sea and Grand National, with not enough lively tracks and i worry he going down the mainstream road instead of sticking to his roots. He needs to get angry again!

He is pretty close to mainstream and being quite bland( if not already there) . I fear his best has been and gone. Quite sad about that as his first album is still a favourite of mine. Lost his rootsy feel a while ago . Still a awesome guitarist though .
