Movie wonderful; DVD not so much!!!!,
This review is from: Nicholas And Alexandra [DVD] (DVD)
I agree entirely with the person who panned the quality of the DVD edition of "Nicholas and Alexandra." In this, the 40th year of the movie's original release, it would be fantastic if the movie studio would re-release my favorite all-time film with corrected/enhanced sound to even out the vast discrepancies in the volume level throughout the movie noted by the other reviewer--evident in the U.S. DVD edition as well as the British version. In addition, it would be great to include any previously unreleased material pertaining to the film and its creation, the Christmas Eve (1970? 1971?) interview of the major cast members and film-makers by Sir David Frost, interviews with the stars and film-makers themselves, reminiscing on their experiences during the film's production, etc., how the stars felt when filming the movie's final scene, how key scenes were filmed, how Janet Suzman, Michael Jayston and Irene Worth got used to/comfortable with wearing their elaborate costumes, etc. Lastly, perhaps Columbia Studios could consider releasing this film with the lavishness it deserves in a Blu-ray/box-set edition, with the elements I have suggested above. The 3- or 4-disc versions of the anniversary release of "Titanic" could serve as inspiration for what Columbia Studios could do for "Nicholas and Alexandra." While N&A obviously did not make nearly as much $$ for Columbia as "Titanic" did for 20th Century Fox and Universal, "Nicholas and Alexandra" still deserves respect and treatment as an epic achievement through the release of a much-enhanced and vastly improved DVD!!!!
P.S.--how about also releasing a companion CD edition of the "Nicholas and Alexandra" movie soundtrack, with more music from the movie than was released on the original soundtrack record album under the Bell label???? Please????

Excellent EXCELLENT review and I too have dreamed about the kind of release for this marvellous film that you described!!! Your suggstions for extras are spot on and I'd add another idea in that now with the Soviet Union thankfully a thing of the past that a filmed tour of all the places connected with the lives of Nicholas and Alexandra could also be done. That would be sensational!! They sure don't make films like this now more's th epity. I've never seen or heard of that Christmas Eve David Frost interview the cast did. I'd love to see it and I'd especially like to hear their thoughts on filming that last startling scene in the film too. Great review.
