This is a wonderful book which ought to be on every 8 year old's bookshelf. The partnership of Paul Stewart (author)and Chris Riddell(illustrator) has already produced "Muddle Earth", the first book in the series and now, here is the sequel.
It is a comic fantasy with similarities (without plagiarism) between 'Lord of The Rings', 'The Lion,The Witch & The Wardrobe' the Harry Potter books and 'His Dark Materials'. The prose is so entertaining that it still seems fresh and original but children will love the familiarity of wizards and dragons and the eternal battle of good versus evil!
The hero of the book is an ordinary boy called Joe who falls through a flat pack wardrobe he is assembling and due to crossed spells is magicked away to the land of Muddle Earth. (He accidentally visted Muddle Earth the previous year (book 1) when a wizard's spell went wrong, so he is familiar with the place.)In each book, Joe helps the inhabitants overcome the baddies, having wonderful adventures as he does so.
The illustrations are a delight and bring the story and characters alive and the paperback version is a quality publication. It is an easy read for age 9 upwards but adults will have great fun reading it aloud to younger children.
Do buy it, it's wonderful!
