Huawei E586 so far so good!,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having purchased an HSPA+ 14.4 Mbps dongle, I came across Huawei E586. So returned the dongle to Amazon and instead got this one. This was sold by a 3rd party seller in Market place but Fulfilled by Amazon. The box had every thing as advertised, and the unit is shiny new and immaculate.
I put the giffgaff sim in it, and turned it on, the unit being unlocked to all networks. It showed that sim was ok, since the signal strength was full, but it continuously kept displaying connected followed by disconnected, as if it was trying to connect but was unsuccessful. The small users' guide in the box was not very helpful, and the seller provided urls in the inside cover take you to a FBI seized domain.
The only thing that the small booklet provided which eventually helped was the dongle web address 192.168.1.1 and password Admin. On the web setup page into the settings tab, dongle was set to auto connect, I changed it to manual, created a new APN, and used the following values for giffgaff.
Profile Name: giffgaff
Dial up number: *99#
User name: giffgaff
APN: Static giffgaff(dot)com
IP Address: Dynamic
It's been working flawlessly since. Also emailed the seller who has provided alternate addresses for downloading instructions to setup, and a list of APNs.
One star docked for useless booklet and non-existent url address inside the package.

Mr. C Richmond says:
Can I ask, the giff gaff sim that you use, is it one of the ones that allows unlimited Internet for a fee per month?

once you have activated Giffgaff and topped up initially with £10, you can buy a goodybag that is worth exactly £10, and that comes with unlimited internet. However you can not use the goodybag in Huawei E586, as that is against the giffgaff T&C. The unlimited internet is for the use of sim in a mobile only, i.e. tethering is strictly prohibited. To use your sim in Huawei E586, you have to buy a gigabag, that comes with 500MB, 1GB data and so on, and cost £5, £10 etc. To answer your question, that is what I used in Huawei E586, a £5 worth of gigabag. Hope that answers your query.

I have bought this recently. I have done changing the APN to giffgaff settings so it can now connect to the internet (slow though) However, when I type in 192.168.1.1, it refers to 3.home. the setting is sticked with 3, how can I change to other/normal setting? Does Huawei have its own one? I wanna check how much data i have used and got.

I have just plugged the mifi to my laptop and was asked to download the "Optus Mini Wifi Modem" thought it was going to solve the problem but it didn't. I installed the app, when i click it, it automatically open the http://e5.home link, but it can't shown up for some reasons. I went back to type the IP address and still it refers to the 3 settings one? What can I do? to make it to go back to the orginal version. The huwaei one?
