This review is from: Four Classic Albums Plus (Annie By Candlelight / Gypsy / A Gasser / Sings A Song With Mulligan) (Audio CD)
Annie Ross is well known for her amazing vocal acrobatics as part of the Lambert, Heindricks and Ross Trio, with their 'Vocalese' jazz rendering of songs.
Here on these fabulous solo albums she is joined by some of the most notable instrumentalists of the late 50's and early 60's.
'Annie by Candlelight' is in a romantic vein with songs such as 'I Didn't Know About You', and 'Skylark', accompanied by Tony Crombie on piano, with Bob Burns,(clarinet) Roy Plummer, guitar) and Lennie Bush,(bass). Recorded in 1956.
The name of Buddy Bregman usually arouses some excitement, and as a personal friend, he arranged 'Gypsy', where Annie sings all the songs from the show, with - wait for it - Stan Getz on tenor sax, and Pete Candoli on trumpet,in the band line up.
My favourite, full of lyrical beauty, is 'Annie Ross Sings a Song with Mulligan'. Annie's vocal range is interspersed with wonderful inventive baritone sax solos, by Gerry, with Chet Baker and Art Farmer, no less, on trumpets. On this album there is a swinging 'This Time the Dream's on Me', and 'All of You', and a very pensive version of 'Ive Grown Accustomed to Her Face', recorded in 1957.
Another sax legend Zoot Sims, heads the line up on 'A Gasser' with Russ Freeman on piano, Jim Hall on guitar, Mel Lewis on drums, and Monte Budwig on Bass. Here Annie presents one of the best versions I have ever heard of 'Everything I've Got' and a very meaningful 'Invitation to the Blues' and a very romantic 'I didn't Know about You', recorded in 1959.
The Plus is - Annie's legendary classic singles recorded in 1952, are included on this CD. 'Annie's Lament', 'Twisted', and Farmer's Market (-talking about beans). Art Blakey on drums, and Ram Ramirez on organ, Percy Heath on bass, and George Wallington on piano, feature on these singles.
If you are not already a fan of Annie Ross, this CD at such a reasonable price, will make you realise what you have been missing, and if you are familiar with her music already, it will be a bonus on your expectations.
