Take a Look at Liz Phair,
By A Customer
This review is from: Liz Phair [Us Import] (Audio CD)
This is the first album I bought by Liz Phair. Not really knowing what to expect before listening to the album, I was quite surprised by it. Other reviewers of her music have said that her songs are usually quite 'angry' and that she is not shy about using swear words. Having listened to the majority of this particular album, these two issues are not really applicable. Some may find "H.W.C" (track 11) a bit risky (if easily embarrassed), but I wouldn't class her songs as especially 'angry'.
She certainly knows how to make a point though. "Take a look" is one example. This song is about challenging someone to 'take a look' at the problems that she has and to still feel the same way about her once they know the details of her "disaster".
"Little digger" is also a poignant song. This tells the story of a little boy talking to his mother's boyfriend. The boy says that his mother 'is mine'- the song then centers on how this affects his mother: "I pray to God that I'm the damaged one."
One of the best songs is "Favourite" which compares a man to her favourite underwear. I know it sounds a bit weird, but it is a great song. Its actually quite an affectionate song and, of course, a little playful.
This is a great album - the songs are catchy and well thought out. This is definitely one woman who deserves more recognition.
