5.0 out of 5 stars Unique view of the retreat to Dunkirk, 26 Nov 2013
This review is from: Retreat from Riviere - the Dunkirk Diary of Major George McNab (Paperback)
Richard McNab has done us all a great service by researching the events and locations in his Father's diary on the retreat to Dunkirk of his RAMC unit. George McNab was a highly motivated and energetic Dr who went to enormous lengths to try and keep his unit and their supplies together during the chaotic circumstances caused by the Blitzkrieg. Richard brings his Father's situation to life and compares it to official and other sources to enable us to follow the story. He has also produced a range of photos, which show the various places "then and now".

This book is uniquely valuable to me, because it relates the way in which my Uncle, the distinguished Thoracic Surgeon Laurence O'Shaughnessy died. O'Shaughnessy was the Brother of Eileen, who was George Orwell's first wife. Prior to the war he had been actively concerned with the care of Orwell's TB. Because of O'Shaughnessy's fame and the confusion of the time, a lot of mythology had developed about his death. In a very valuable chapter, McNab details exactly what the events were leading up to his death and what caused it. George McNab's grief at the loss of his friend and colleague are clear.

Anybody with an interest in learning more about the situation surrounding the events at Dunkirk and or an interest in George Orwell will find this account fascinating.
