This review is from: Lecture (Paperback)In terms of background to Olgiati's designs, this is probably the best resource I have yet found, being the transcript and slides of a lecture he gave. Annoyingly, Birkhauser neglected to provide the date or any detailed information on when the presentation took place. It does give an insight into four projects by Olgiati - the visitor centre at Zernez, A House for A Musician in Scharans, a non-winning competition entry for a university building in Lausanne and the studios of Olgiati in Flims. The lecture conveys a clarity of the importance of a single, strong idea in the design of his buildings and the text and accompanying slides do well at underlining this approach. Where the book falls down on is its format - nasty glossy paper and small (around 15cm x 15cm). You just feel that it hasn't been produced with the usual love that Birkhauser afford their publications. That said, it is accessible and not expensive and probably the ideal starting point for anyone interested in understanding the work of Valerio Olgiati.
