This review is from: Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show! Series 5 [complete] [3CD] (Audio CD)Please may I have a polka of your time? Uh.. waltz? No, soddit... MINUET! Please may I have a minuet of your parsley?
And so defines much of the humour of Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show: an ageing man, who is a legend in his own mind, and whose mind is slowly failing him. He is rude to his friends, arrogant, exasperating to be around. And yet we, the listeners, love him.
This is the fifth series, and the comedy (unlike Count Arthur's brain) is as fresh as ever. He stumbles from one disaster to another, all of which are of his own making. Woe betide anyone who books him as an after-dinner speaker, unless you like hearing a drunken OAP's cacophonous rendition of "Aunty Mary had a canary".
Situation comedies, after a few series, run the risk of Jumping The Shark. Not so here: Steve Delany's writing and performing skills are pure shark-repellent. You could easily include Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show in the same sentence as Just a Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and none of the named titles would be devalued.
So slip on your carpet slippers, relax in your ageing patched leather armchair and relax to the words of Count Arthur Strong, winner of the best trilby hat wearing competition from 1968 to 1969.
